The non-consensual sharing of intimate images is a type of cybercrime under the draft UN Convention against cybercrime. While this criminal phenomenon has a broad range of criminal modalities - including those commonly knowns as “revenge porn”, “sextortion”- this crime is increasingly expanding in complexity and victimization, affecting both men and women, as well as vulnerable groups around the world.
In December 2024, UNODC though the Global Programme on Cybecrime and the Civil Society Unit together with Southwest Grid for Learning launched the Global Strategy to prevent and combat non-consensual sharing of intimate images, an initiative to enhance a differentiated model of work based on technology-based solutions to prevent and combat this cybercrime.
The UNODC Global Programme on Cybercrime is a multinational team of experts based around the world, dedicated to strengthening the capacities of States to prevent and combat cybercrime in all its forms.
Through a holistic approach based on four key pillars – legal frameworks, capacity-building, international cooperation, and prevention – the Programme supports Governments, law enforcement, prosecutors, judges, digital forensic experts, and civil society in addressing the evolving threats posed by cyber-enabled and cyber-dependent crimes to ensure a safer and more secure digital environment for all.
