The transformation of the sports sector – driven by globalization, increased investment, sports betting and technology – has significantly impacted corruption, both in its scale and forms. UNODC tackles these emerging threats through the Programme on Safeguarding Sport from Corruption and Economic Crime, empowering stakeholders worldwide to strengthen their efforts in combating corruption in sport.

A joint initiative developed by UNODC and the International Olympic Committee
Go to pageCorruption is a crime against sport. It threatens the integrity of competitions and undermines the social and economic benefits that sport brings to individuals and communities.
Corruption in sport can take many forms – including fraud, money-laundering, abuse of authority, competition manipulation, illegal betting, and misconduct related to the organization of events, athlete transfers and ownership of sports organizations. These issues often have transnational dimensions, making them even more complex to address.
To confront these challenges, UNODC established the Programme on Safeguarding Sport from Corruption and Economic Crime in 2017. The Programme aims to support governments, sports organizations and other key stakeholders in tackling corruption and economic crime in the world of sport.
