The overall objective of the UNODC Programme on Safeguarding Sport from Corruption and Economic Crime is to support governments and sports organizations, at national, regional and international levels, in effectively tackling corruption in sport.

Corruption in sport

Corruption in sport takes various forms and extends beyond the field. The Programme has developed a comprehensive thematic framework, looking at sport-specific corruption, sport-related corruption and linkages between corruption and other crimes.

The Programme achieves this objective by:

Developing tools, guides and reports to support the detection and prosecution of corruption and economic crime in sport, as well as to raise awareness about corruption in sport and inform the policymaking process.
Creating and promoting effective cooperation frameworks between criminal justice authorities, sport organizations and relevant stakeholders, as well as ensuring proper cooperation and exchange of information.
Enhancing capacities of relevant stakeholders in the investigation and prosecution of cases involving corruption in sport through workshops, conferences and webinars.
Supporting the development of the necessary legislation, regulations and policies to help tackle corruption and economic crime in sport.
Raising awareness about corruption risks through a blend of virtual, hybrid and in-person formats at the national, regional and international levels.

Since its inception in 2017, the Programme has achieved notable outcomes, including:

4,000+ officials from 150+ countries were supported by the Programme, including through the organization of 50+ national and regional activities.

20+ publications to better understand corruption risks in sport.

4,000+ officials from 150+ countries were supported by the Programme, including Supporting the development of new legislation in Uzbekistan to address competition manipulation, utilizing the UNODC and IOC guide, Legal Approaches to Tackling the Manipulation of Sports Competitions.

Co-implementing the FIFA Global Integrity Programme.

Participating in the Olympic Movement Group on the Prevention of the Manipulation of Competitions, UEFA Anti-Match-Fixing Working Group, INTERPOL Match-Fixing Task Force, Ad Hoc Match Monitoring Group for the 2024 Copa America and the Crime and Sport International Working Group Meeting.
